5 Books I Read In One Sitting

The Books I’ve Read In One Sitting

Have you ever read a book in one (or almost one) sitting? It’s a rare thing for me - to read something in absolutely one sitting - but there have been a handful of books I’ve compulsively read and couldn’t put down over the last couple of years. Sometimes, I can read a book in almost one sitting - where I may read most of it in one day, but then finish it up the following morning or something like that. That’s also still very rare, but it is fun to get that lost and fully submerged in a story like that! More typically, I read at a 4-5 day pace and that’s when I’m really into a book. But let’s get real… no matter how you read… all that really matters is that you are reading! So if you’ve never read a book in one sitting, no big deal, and if you have, that’s cool too. I have fun analyzing past reading experiences. Stuff like that is really interesting to me.

So, I’ve rounded up the last 5 books I’ve read in one (and almost one) sitting! I also decided to showcase a few novellas that really captured my attention. Those are shorty, but goodies. I’d love to hear about some of the books you’ve loved so much you couldn’t put them down. Let me know about them in the comments at the end of this blog.

1 // Ignite Me

BY TAHEREH MAFI

book 3 in the shatter me series

With Omega Point destroyed, Juliette doesn’t know if the rebels, her friends, or even Adam are alive. But that won’t keep her from trying to take down The Reestablishment once and for all. Now she must rely on Warner, the handsome commander of Sector 45. The one person she never thought she could trust. The same person who saved her life. He promises to help Juliette master her powers and save their dying world . . . but that’s not all he wants with her.

my quick thoughts

I started this on a morning I wasn’t feeling very well (mentally) earlier this year. Tahereh’s writing is addicting and I love her focus on mental health and emotional well-being. The Shatter Me Series started out a bit rocky for me, but by Book 2 I was forever hooked!

2 // An Emotion of Great Delight

BY TAHEREH MAFI

ABOUT THE BOOK

From bestselling and National Book Award-nominated author Tahereh Mafi comes a stunning novel about love and loneliness, navigating the hyphen of dual identity, and reclaiming your right to joy--even when you're trapped in the amber of sorrow.

It's 2003, several months since the US officially declared war on Iraq, and the American political world has evolved. Tensions are high, hate crimes are on the rise, FBI agents are infiltrating local mosques, and the Muslim community is harassed and targeted more than ever. Shadi, who wears hijab, keeps her head down.

She's too busy drowning in her own troubles to find the time to deal with bigots.

Shadi is named for joy, but she's haunted by sorrow. Her brother is dead, her father is dying, her mother is falling apart, and her best friend has mysteriously dropped out of her life. And then, of course, there's the small matter of her heart--

It's broken.

Shadi tries to navigate her crumbling world by soldiering through, saying nothing. She devours her own pain, each day retreating farther and farther inside herself until finally, one day, everything changes.

She explodes.

An Emotion of Great Delight is a searing look into the world of a single Muslim family in the wake of 9/11. It's about a child of immigrants forging a blurry identity, falling in love, and finding hope--in the midst of a modern war.

MY QUICK THOUGHTS

Tahereh again! I found An Emotion of Great Delight heartbreaking and devastating yet incredibly beautiful and filled with so much hope. Mafi’s writing continues to be poetic and lyrical with subtle notes of humor and hands down beautifully written prose. ⁣⁣⁣

3 // Stone Cold Touch

BY JENNIFER L. ARMENTROUT

BOOK 2 IN THE DARK ELEMENTS SERIES

Every touch has its price.

Layla Shaw is trying to pick up the pieces of her shattered life—no easy task for a seventeen-year-old who’s pretty sure things can’t get worse. Her impossibly gorgeous best friend, Zayne, is forever off-limits thanks to the mysterious powers of her soul-stealing kiss. The Warden clan that has always protected her is suddenly keeping dangerous secrets. And she can barely think about Roth, the wickedly hot demon prince who understood her in ways no one else could.

But sometimes rock bottom is only the beginning. Because suddenly Layla’s powers begin to evolve, and she’s offered a tantalizing taste of what has always been forbidden. Then, when she least expects it, Roth returns, bringing news that could change her world forever. She’s finally getting what she always wanted, but with hell literally breaking loose and the body count adding up, the price may be higher than Layla is willing to pay…

MY QUICK THOUGHTS

I read this on the way home from the beach in 2020. I think as a form of recovery after family vacations I devour words to reset! This story and series is spunky and fun and romantic. If you haven’t met Roth and you love fantasy romance, paranormal elements, and JLA, you’ve got to make time for this series.

4 // A Touch of Ruin

BY SCARLETT ST. CLAIR

book 2 in the Hades x Persephone Series

Persephone's relationship with Hades has gone public and the resulting media storm disrupts her normal life and threatens to expose her as the Goddess of Spring.

Hades, God of the Dead, is burdened by a hellish past that everyone's eager to expose in an effort to warn Persephone away.

Things only get worse when a horrible tragedy leaves Persephone's heart in ruin and Hades refusing to help. Desperate, she takes matters into her own hands, striking bargains with severe consequences.

Faced with a side of Hades she never knew and crushing loss, Persephone wonders if she can truly become Hades' queen.

my quick thoughts

I have a clear memory of reading this late into the night on our couch in the living room in complete darkness on my kindle as my husband fell asleep to Schitt’s Creek beside me. No idea why that is, but I think it’s because of how much I loved/love this book! This series was decidedly unexpected for me. I really just went into it with no expectations and this story has far exceeded anything I could have imagined! I love Scarlett’s worlds and love stories so much. I live for the steaminess between Hades and Sephy, and Hermes is still the ultimate BFF.

5 // Gild

BY RAVEN KENNEDY

ABOUT THE BOOK

The fae abandoned this world to us. And the ones with power rule. Gold. Gold floors, gold walls, gold furniture, gold clothes. In Highbell, in the castle built into the frozen mountains, everything is made of gold. Even me.

King Midas rescued me. Dug me out of the slums and placed me on a pedestal. I’m called his precious. His favored. I’m the woman he Gold-Touched to show everyone that I belong to him. To show how powerful he is. He gave me protection, and I gave him my heart. And even though I don’t leave the confines of the palace, I’m safe.

Until war comes to the kingdom and a deal is struck.

Suddenly, my trust is broken. My love is challenged. And I realize that everything I thought I knew about Midas might be wrong.

Because these bars I’m kept in, no matter how gilded, are still just a cage. But the monsters on the other side might make me wish I’d never left.

The myth of King Midas reimagined. This compelling adult fantasy series is as addictive as it is unexpected. With romance, intrigue, and danger, the gilded world of Orea will grip you from the very first page.

Please Note: This book contains explicit content and darker elements, including mature language, violence, and rape. It is not intended for anyone under 18 years of age. This is book one in a series.

my quick thoughts

This is another book that I recall vividly starting and finishing cozy on my couch one afternoon when I was mentally struggling, and also recovering from the book that was To Bleed a Crystal Bloom by Sarah A. Parker (another fae fantasy romance must-read by the way). I had completely forgotten Gild was a fae fantasy series so that was a pleasant surprise while reading! And this book is a bit tough and stressful due to its darker elements, but I found the storyline incredibly compelling, and based on everyone’s review of the entire series, it’s worth it! But, of course, consider those trigger warnings and maybe enlist a reading buddy who’s gone through the book already who you might be able to lean on if needed.

3 Novellas That Captured My Attention

I also read the following novellas in one sitting! They are shorty, but goodies and amazing companion novellas to two of my favorite series, The Simple Wild by K.A. Tucker, and The Illuminae Files by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. The Haunting of Beatrix Greene is the perrrfect spicey and spooky haunting if you’re into that kind of thing!
